Transportation in the Southern Black Hills
The Heartland Expressway is a multi-lane, divided highway that facilitates domestic and international trade by connecting the Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor to the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway.

Highway

U.S. Highway 18, the favorite of long haul truckers is an east-west, two-lane, concrete highway that extends from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Interstate 25 in Orin, Wyoming. It is one of the original U.S. highways of 1926 and continues to be an important regional connection. From Edgemont and through Hot Springs, U.S. Highway 18 connects to the Heartland Expressway which connects to I-80 and I-90. The Heartland Expressway is a multi-lane, divided highway that facilitates domestic and international trade by connecting the Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor to the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway. Interstate 25 is about 110 miles west with I-80 and I-90 easily accessible from I-25 as well.

Hot Springs Municipal (KHSR) Airport
Hot Springs Municipal Airport is located at the southern gateway to Black Hills, and Wind Cave National Park. The airport can accommodate a variety of aircraft from J3s to Gulfstream corporate jets. Because of its geographical location, Hot Springs Municipal Airport is now a permanent air tanker fire base during the summer fire season.  


Chadron Municipal (CDR) Airport
The Chadron Municipal Airport is 52 miles from Hot Springs, South Dakota and is the closest airport offering commercial flights that are provided by Boutique Air with service to Denver International Airport or Alliance, Nebraska.

Rapid City Regional (RAP) Airport 
The Rapid City Regional Airport is located 62 miles from Hot Springs, SD and has over 8 airline carriers that fly approximately 7 flights per week. The top airline carrier flying out of Rapid City Regional is Delta Air Lines and they fly over 328 flights every month.

Denver International (DEN) Airport
The Denver International Airport is 4.5 hours from Hot Springs, South Dakota and strives to be America's favorite connecting hub. The Denver International Airport is the 18th-busiest airport in the world and the sixth-busiest airport in the United States. With 58.3 million passengers traveling through the airport each year, DEN is one of the busiest airline hubs in the world’s largest aviation market. 

Rail Service 

Rail companies are also prevalent in the area with Burlington Northern-Santa Fe coming through Edgemont, 27 miles to the west. The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern railroad operates on the east side of Fall River County, 10 miles away. 

Prairie Hills Transportation Service

Prairie Hills Transportation Service is available to meet the needs of all people in the Hot Springs area. Many think the buses are for the elderly and the handicapped. But our service is intended to provide non-emergency medical transportation, as well as trips for shopping, banking, and nutrition. Critical medical needs such as dialysis, physical therapy or other scheduled appointments are easily accommodated as well.
